Hi everyone! I hope your week is off to a good start. Don't forget to send me your favorite Memorial Day weekend photo's by tomorrow. I will post my favorite images on Friday, June 4th. You can email your images to studio@matthewjordansmith.com
Getting your work published in a tangible or online magazine is one of the best ways to promote your photography. In the beginning it may seem hard but if you have great work and follow my advise you will reap the rewards of showcasing your work.
Step 1) Find five publication you'd love to have your work published in:
Make a goal and write down the names or sites of the publications. You will need to know each magazine from end to end. Make sure you love these publications because you are going to keep reading these for the next year if you are not reading them already. Write down what you love about each publication and why you want to shoot for them.
Step 2) Look at the Masthead page of the publication.
This is the media page or publishing list, which is usually found on the editorial page of a magazine. For example in Elle magazine's June issue the masthead page is page 28. Once your find this page look for the photo editor, asst. photo editor and write their names down. These are the people you will spend time getting to know each month. Staff changes often so keep your end on this list each month. When editors change they usually go to another magazine and if you have the connection you go along with them.
3) Print your favorite image
You need to love this image, not simply like it. The image should be no larger than 8x10 but smaller is best. Print your image on the best paper you can find. Epson's Cold Press Bright is amazing. Once you have a print you are proud of sign the print and write a hand written letter of introduction. Now send your signed print and introduction letter to your perspective client.
This is just some of the small things I do to stand out. If you are serious about getting your work in front of millions of readers each month come learn more at my seminar. I will be in Los Angeles on June 28th and 29th
This month editorial issues include:
Working Mother Cover of Vanessa Williams and daughter
(the magazine forgot to change the photo credit from last month in the issue so it's credited with the wrong photographer. To make up for this they have promised another cover this year). :-(
